It’s been out there for a short while, it seems, but I’ve just stumbled upon on the free web-based translation memory tool from Wordfast. The tool allows translators to build and maintain TMs online and access them from anywhere via the Internet. In June, Wordfast claimed 5,000 users had already registered to use the tool.
Wordfast Anywhere seems like it could be rather useful:
- Wordfast boasts the tool’s capability of storing up to two million segments in 23 language pairs.
- An impressive number of file formats can be translated, including .doc, PDF and PPT.
- All TM assets and files are kept confidential, and each user is given a private, password-protected profile.
- Users are given access to the company’s VLTM (very large translation memory) and machine translation features, which are built and maintained by Wordfast users.
The tool is currently free of charge, but the company has indicated it will eventually charge for similar tools with enhanced features.
I’d be willing to bet this, like other TMs, comes with many caveats surrounding quality. Sure, an impressive number of file formats can be translated. But can they be translated impressively?
